Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington

The Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington focuses on smaller, local charities with budgets below $3 million - charities about which the public rarely hears because most cannot afford public fundraising and many attract no media attention at all. If "making a difference" is one of your goals in charitable giving, then these excellent, carefully vetted charities may be for you.

If you wish to make a donation online to support a Catalogue charity, just click the "donate now" button at the charity's page and let the website walk you through the process.

If you want to use our Donate Now/Decide Later Fund you can make an online contribution to the Catalogue (we are a tax-exempt organization too) and decide in January to which charities you wish to distribute your funds. Click the DONATE NOW button at the bottom of this page to begin the process, and write "decide later" in the designation box when it appears.

You may also send a check to the Catalogue at our address and indicate that you wish to "decide later." Make sure to include your contact information so that we can remind you in January if you need reminding.

Or consider a donation to the Catalogue project itself. We have helped excellent local charities to raise over $7.5 million in the last six years - but we can't do it alone. Your contribution helps hundreds of organizations to improve the quality of life ... for all of us.

Steve Pearlstein's annual column "celebrates those companies and their employees that have continued to contribute their time, money, and ingenuity to local charitable causes." The article mentions the Catalogue's partnerships with the Wal-Mart Foundation and CGI Federal, which, in the last year, have supported a dozen Catalogue nonprofits. CGI Federal also has been instrumental in developing our new portal. Booz Allen Hamilton, a new Catalogue investor in 2008-09, also is featured among 50 companies recognized for "extraordinary acts of corporate philanthropy."

A Better Way to Give at the Office
Posted Sun Dec 7 2008 by Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington
The Washington Post's Close to Home op-ed page features an article that highlights the Catalogue's partnership with CGI Federal and our new co-branded portal. It begins, "Workplace philanthropy campaigns during the holidays need to be given the pink slip. This shortsighted fundraising model not only gets lost in the sea of December personal spending; it also encourages a one-shot approach to doing good that limits the ability of service agencies and nonprofits to meet dire year-round needs. Even when the economy is doing well, concentrated giving during a single, compressed time period makes little sense. It's not as if poverty, homelessness, hunger and health issues disappear after the holidays." The portal is described as a good corporate model for cultivating deep and lasting donor-recipient partnerships. The Catalogue's other Portal Partners are TTR Sotheby's International Realty and Booz Allen Hamilton.
