In 1972, Alternative House was founded as an emergency two-week shelter to help runaway and homeless teens, many of whom were abused, neglected, depressed, or addicted. Providing the basics first—food, clothing, and intensive counseling—AH also puts teens in touch with services that can get them off the streets and, where possible, reunite them with their families. Today it operates a national hotline (1-800-SAY-TEEN), a mobile outreach van that provides information and survival supplies to 300 teens per month, and neighborhood-based after-school programs that offer homework help, counseling, and a safe haven from gang recruitment. Two daytime Support on Suspension programs help teens who have been suspended from school use their time constructively and keep up with their school work. A transitional living program provides homeless teen mothers and their children with housing, job training, and child development counseling, while the teens continue their education and save for the future. After the closing of four shelters, Alternative House is the only shelter for youth in Northern Virginia. Your philanthropy keeps the doors open and protects our vulnerable children.
