CityDance Ensemble

Begun as a pick-up company assembled for a single project in August 1996, CityDance Ensemble has come a very long way indeed: collaborating with choreographers, dancers, musicians, composers, filmmakers, and educators, CityDance creates world-class programs that break traditional boundaries between artistic disciplines. CityDance combines the best of many worlds: it is known equally for its extraordinary performances (The Washington Times calls it "Washington's preeminent modern dance company"), its FilmWORKS division (which documents dances originally created for the stage), and its CityDance Early Arts program (which reaches 450 students per week, maintains 18 residencies in DC, MD, and VA, and reaches 10,000 youngsters a year through performances and classes). The largest outreach dance education program in the region, with an unwavering commitment to communities in which arts education is least accessible and affordable, CityArts is the natural outgrowth of this exceptional company. Named a Top 25 to Watch by Dance Magazine, awarded the Mayor's Arts Award for "Outstanding Emerging Artist," and winner of three DC Metro Dance Awards, CityDance enriches the artistic landscape of our Nation's capital with performances and programs that expand the scope, audience, and opportunities for dance. Your support keeps our culture alive and sets the hearts of children dancing.

Posted Wed Jun 11 2008 by CityDance Ensemble
n the day they sweat it out, all right – but not on the streets, as Bruce Springsteen’s classic ‘‘Born To Run” puts it. No, the dancers in the CityDance Ensemble do most of their sweating in the rehearsal rooms of the Music Center at Strathmore. And when they perform their interpretation of the Boss’ anthem — choreographed by artistic director Paul Gordon Emerson — the company will evoke the misty beaches and jammed highways of Jersey right on the North Bethesda stage.
