GUH Kids Mobile Medical Clinic
Children in Washington continue to rank among the country’s most medically vulnerable. High rates of poverty, low numbers of accessible providers, and lack of insurance prevent children from receiving even routine healthcare. Georgetown Kids Mobile Medical Clinic believes that every child deserves high-quality, comprehensive, culturally competent care. So each week the 40-foot mobile pediatric clinic--first of its kind in DC--travels to six "health professional shortage areas" in the most disenfranchised neighborhoods, bringing medical care right to those who need it--in seven public housing communities (home to some 2,000 children), two public high schools (an additional 1,500), and an Emergency Family Shelter (more than 100 children monthly--many of whom, now in foster care, have been victims of abuse and neglect). Well-patient checkups, immunizations, opthamology exams, sick visits, chronic illness management, and referrals to specialists are all provided free of charge; an on-call pediatrician is available 24/7. Preventive care and information about healthy lifestyle choices are critical parts of individual, family, and community health education. The clinic also provides wide-ranging adolescent services, and coordinated care for mental health and social services--and it simultaneously educates its young medical professionals about the disparities in healthcare for children. Let your philanthropy join theirs to make a huge difference here.
