Montgomery Housing Partnership
Montgomery Housing Partnership is about preserving and expanding quality affordable housing. And the need is there: as the second most populous jurisdiction in metro DC, the county continues to witness a growing population and the highest average housing costs in the state. The combination means a housing shortage that forces low- to moderate-income workers out of the market and into long and costly commutes. To combat this trend, MHP acquires, rehabilitates, builds, manages, and rents affordable homes--over 900 since 1989. Training in financial literacy, and individualized credit counseling, are also offered, and MHP promotes saving for a home by matching monthly contributions to savings accounts on a 3:1 basis. To revitalize neighborhoods, MHP also encourages community organizing and the development of neighborhood associations--both critical components. But strengthening community life takes more than this. That’s why MHP initiated pre-school groups, homework clubs, summer enrichment programs, teen projects, ESL classes, and computer courses for the people who participate in its housing programs--an innovative approach, to be sure. A member of NeighborWorks, recipient of the 2003 Nonprofit Development of the Year Award, and two Montgomery County’s Best Honor Awards, MHP builds homes, homeowners, neighborhoods, and neighbors. Your partnership is warmly invited.
