For twenty-five years WVSA arts connection has been developing, implementing, and supporting arts-integrated education and employment for children and youth with behavioral, learning and developmental disabilities. The focus on children is now embodied in SAIL (School for Arts in Learning), a public charter school founded in 1998 with an arts-infused curriculum, while older youth participate in the ARTiculate Employment Training Program. Students learn applied and fine arts and, through them, self-awareness, self-expression, and the means to future success. Artist apprentices train and practice their craft in fully functioning art studios; they display and sell their work in the ARTiculate Gallery. The program also teaches basic vocational, social, and life skills--from the simple to the complex: the importance of attendance and deadlines; the value of interpersonal communication; the advantages of problem-solving and good group dynamics. Participants explore and prepare for careers through tasks specifically suited to their talents, aspirations, and needs. Operating the only vocational and life skills program in DC for youth with disabilities who are making the difficult transition from school to work, college, or other professional training programs, WVSA arts connection serves nearly 400 youth and their families each year.
