The In Series

WISH LIST
$100: school performance fee for 1 artist;
$500: 1 school performance of Going to the Opera with Mozart;
$1000: development of new Latino or community outreach/education program

Showcasing the talent of performing artists in DC, The In Series offers a unique and eclectic blend of theater, opera, cabaret, poetry, performance art, chamber music, and Latin-American and Spanish musical theater – all at affordable prices. The idea is to demystify artistic disciplines and cultures: Mozart’s The Magic Flute gets a new, accessible English book and lyrics; Bizet’s Carmen is stripped of its grand trappings and framed as a flamenco tablao dance and story-telling event. Latino audiences say that classical musical theatre, pop song, and poetry performances help them rediscover their cultural heritage as they experience works that they – or their parents – might otherwise have forgotten. Community outreach programs include everything from bilingual poetry workshops, to cabaret performances, to kid-friendly introductions to opera for underserved school children. Once construction is complete in ‘08, In Series will have a new, secure home-base at the Source Theatre in the U Street Arts Corridor – a hub of artistic activity with exciting opportunities for audience development and community service. But they can’t do it alone!
