PLEASE NOTE: Online providers charge a small fee for credit card and other administrative services, but the Catalogue does not take a cut of any donation made to a charity on this site.

  1. BY CREDIT CARD OR ONLINE CHECK AT OUR WEBSITE
  2. DIRECT TO THE CHARITIES
  3. VIA OUR GIVING FORM
  4. BY ORDERING A GIFT CERTIFICATE
  5. BY MAKING A GIFT OF APPRECIATED STOCK
  6. BY USING OUR "DONATE NOW/DECIDE LATER" FUND

1) BY CREDIT CARD or PAYPAL at our WEBSITE

From the DC homepage, click 2003-09 CHARITIES and you will be brought to a complete list of all charities by field and subfield. You can also search this list by name, by year, or by region (DC, MD, VA). Browse the list, and click the organization that interests you. Still looking? Return to the master list by clicking your "back" button. Interested in the charities in this year's Catalogue? Go to the ALL CHARITIES banner on the top right of the homepage and choose "Current Year" for a complete list (also sortable by name, category, etc), or use the drop down menus that run along the top of the page to view by category.

Find the charity or charities of your choice, and then click DONATE NOW to add the charity to your GIFT CART. If you wish to make a second or third choice, click "add another donation." When you are finished choosing, follow the steps to complete the donation process.

You may use your credit card or Pay Pal (if you have an account): a 4.75% credit card fee applies; most donors add the fee onto their donation so that the charity receives the entire gift. For example, if you make a $100 donation and add $4.75, you will cover the cost of your gift and the charity will receive the full $100. Otherwise, it will receive $96.25. To learn more about our provider for online donations, Network for Good, click here.

Please note that you can now choose to give monthly, quarterly, or annually if you wish. Once you initiate the "donate now" process, pull down the menu choice that's right for you. For example, a $600 gift can be given in $50 monthly installments, or $150 quarterly installments; a $200 gift can be given annually at a designated time. Use this option if you want to break a larger gift into smaller installments, or be "reminded" to give on a regular basis.

IF YOU WANT YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO FULFILL A PARTICULAR WISH ON A CHARITY'S WISH LIST, make sure to write "WISH LIST" in the designation box. If the amount you are giving corresponds to the wish you are fulfilling, nothing more needs to be done. Both the amount and the designation will be communicated to the recipient.

If you are donating an amount larger than the wish list item, please indicate which wish is part of your gift. EXAMPLE: for a $500 donation of which $100 is a wish list item: in the designation box, write "includes $100 wish."

2) DIRECT to the CHARITIES

Use one of the browsing methods described above to identify the donations you wish to make. Then mail your checks directly to the charities you wish to support—and please let them know you found them in the Catalogue for Philanthropy. Send them a letter, or just write "cfp" in the memo section of your check. You’ll find each organization’s contact information right under its entry on the site.

3) VIA our GIVING FORM

Print out and complete page 2 of this Giving Form (PDF), including the names of charities from this or prior Catalogues to which you would like to contribute. Write a single check to CATALOGUE FOR PHILANTHROPY: GREATER WASHINGTON and send it in an envelope, along with the completed form, to:

Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington
PO Box 9784
Washington, DC 20016-9998

We will distribute 100% of your funds as you direct. Please note the minimum donation amount of $50 per charity.

4) BY ORDERING a GIFT CERTIFICATE

Gift certificates allow you to give the gift of philanthropy to someone else. Certificates may be ordered online, by mail, or by phone, and they arrive at your gift recipient's door with a copy of our latest Catalogue. Please click the gift certificate link on the DC homepage for detailed instructions.

5) BY MAKING a GIFT of APPRECIATED STOCK

Sentinel Securities, Inc., a member of NASD & SIPC, handles gifts of stock for Catalogue donors. The first step is to complete AND SIGN a Letter of Authorization and send it to your broker. The second step is to send us a letter or email (see our address in #3 above, or email bharman@catalogueforphilanthropy-dc.org) indicating the charities to which we should distribute your gift. Once securities are transferred and you communicate your wishes to us, we will advise Sentinel to liquidate the stock and we will make the distribution exactly as you direct.

The Catalogue charges no fee for this service, but Sentinel does charge a flat transaction fee of $49.95 plus $4.95 handling fee--which will be deducted from the total amount raised. Please feel free to call us with questions (202-549-6369) or to contact Kendra Snavely who handles the Catalogue account at Sentinel Securities (ph: 617-338-8230). Donating appreciated stock can be a "tax-wise" way to conduct your charitable giving!

PLEASE NOTE: Your contribution of stock to the Catalogue for Philanthropy is a charitable gift and is deductible (according to IRS tax laws) in the calendar year in which the donation is made. YOU MUST TELL US IN WRITING (EMAIL IS FINE) THAT THE CONTRIBUTION HAS BEEN MADE as there is no identifying information attached to the stock transfer itself. Contacting us lets us remind you, if necessary, to identify the charities to which you would like to make your gifts.

6) BY USING OUR DONATE NOW/DECIDE LATER FUND

The Fund is a convenience for donors. It allows you to make a contribution to the Catalogue online in November or December, and make your selections after the busy holiday season. Just write "decide later" in the designation box when you are going through the donation process--or send a single check to the Catalogue. Then inform us in January who the recipients will be.

If you are donating online, click here to get to the Catalogue's donation page:

If you are contributing by mail, send your check to:

Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington
PO Box 9784
Washington, DC 20016-9998

When the holiday rush has settled down, and you have the leisure to make informed decisions, write to us, email us at bharman@cfp-dc.org, or call us on the phone at 202-549-6369 and tell us what your choices are. We will distribute your funds as you direct.
