National Philharmonic
ALL TCHAIKOVSKY
This all-Tchaikovsky concert begins with the Polonaise, an energetic dance from the composer’s opera Eugene Onegin. The Gold Medal winner of the XIV International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, held in Moscow in June 2011, will be the soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto more event info > No. 1, a majestic yet virtuosic work. Tchaikovsky briefly considered composing an opera based on Romeo and Juliet, but instead, in 1880, completed it as an overture-fantasy, in which some of the themes represent specific character and plot developments of Shakespeare’s iconic play. Commissioned to compose the festive 1812 Overture to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Czar Alexander II’s ascension to the throne, Tchaikovsky commemorated the clash between French and Russian military forces using folk songs, hymns and the national anthems of their countries. The overture is traditionally performed at July 4th celebrations.

Much like a colander strains out pasta from a pot of water, our trash trap separates and traps the solid trash from heading further downstream. Literacy Council of Northern Virginia
Reading: A Family Affair is a family literacy day put on by the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia (LCNV). This FREE, five-hour event brings books alive through a variety of venues:
* SEE a Book (on stage performances by puppeteers and musicians)
* HEAR a Book (storytellers)
* BECOME a Book more event info >(audience participation)
* READ & WRITE a Book (reading/writing activities; book giveaways)
* CLICK a Book (guided computer activities)
In addition to participating in these events, each child in attendance receives a free book to take home.
Not only does RAFA provide an opportunity to introduce kids and their parents to the literacy activities available throughout the community, it has become a way for LCNV to get the word out to potential volunteers, adults who need LCNV services, and businesses and individuals looking for a great mission to support.

Bach's great exposition and meditation on the fugue, created at the end of his life, is considered his last will and testament, or, in Christopher Wolff's words, "the attainment of an ultimate goal, the 'be-all and end-all' of an extraordinarily more event info > strong willed artistic personality." Glenn Gould said of the work, "There's never been anything more beautiful in all of music." The Art of the Fugue was not written for any specific instrumentation. The AYPO Music Buddies Mentorship Program is a peer-to-peer musical training opportunity for youth in the region. The program provides eight months of free, weekly, private music instruction to middle school and elementary school students given by trained AYPO musicians interested in teaching and giving more event info > back to the community. At the end of each year, mentees, their families, and mentors are encouraged to participate in the Music Buddies Showcase Recital.
