Description of Volunteer Opportunities/Responsibilities:
The Rescue Squad's volunteers are a tight, elite group that carries out a life-saving mission 365 days a year, 24/7 for the communities that we serve. Members are required to stand duty either one night a week from 7:00 pm until 7:00 am, or each Saturday. It is "okay" to have neither training nor experience since the squad will provide all training free of charge. If an individual is at least 18 years old; has a high school diploma; possesses good character; and also has physical strength, stamina, and a strong constitution, he/she can apply for membership in the squad. In addition, if an interested person is between 16-18 years old, he/she can apply to volunteer as a Junior Member.
Number of Volunteers: 150
Types of Volunteers Needed: Adult-individual; Teen (13 and up)-individual; Other
Training Requirements: The training and rewarding life experiences one gains as a member of the BCCRS, combined with being of great value to our community, make the BCCRS an organization that can change one's life. Once an individual has been accepted for membership in the squad, he/she must pass the mandatory physical examination. After that, training to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) can begin. Further training is required to become a firefighter and/or paramedic. All EMTs and paramedics undergo extensive training and are state-certified. EMTs receive 130 hours of classroom training, in addition to countless hours of practical exercises. Paramedics receive 600 hours of classroom training and clinical time in a hospital setting. Training can run more than 2 years and, in addition to the above-mentioned hours, continues with a 70-hour Rescue Technician course followed by further specialized Rescue Squad training covering all aspects of squad truck operations. All training is provided free of charge either at the Rescue Squad or at the Montgomery County Public Service Training Academy, located near Shady Grove Hospital in Rockville, MD.
