Volunteer Opportunities

AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation

Volunteer Coordinator: None, N/A, N/A

Description of Volunteer Opportunities/Responsibilities:
Our greatest need for volunteers is at the board level. We have ambitious plans to expand our impact in DC- by building more preschools that close the achievement gap before children enter kindergarten. We need committed volunteers at the board level with real estate kncorporates counting and finance, fundraising experience, and passion for improving educational opportunities for the most disadvantaged children. We have a business plan that was developed with support of an outside consultant that guides our work--and we have an extraordinary opportunity to grow our impact in DC through our Federal Investing in Innovation grant (Every Child Ready).

We have a variety of new preschool facilities that we have developed throughout the city through our R.E.A.D. (Real Estate Asset Development) program. Volunteers are needed one or twice a year to refresh paint, help with special projects like landscaping, playground improvement or other special projects.

Unpaid internships are available throughout the year. Our interns work with our Professional Development Coordinator, Development Officer, and other senior staff to carry out a wide range of projects. They gain experience in administration and project management. Volunteers can visit our charter school from time to time to read to the children. AppleTree Institute's Board of Directors also serves on a volunteer basis and participate in development activities.

Suggestions for a Drive to Benefit this Organization: We would benefit enormously from a childrens' book drive. We are building two new preschool campuses and need to equip them with books for preschool-aged children. This is essential for our program, as we seek to build language, literacy, and numeracy skills in at-risk children.
