College Bound
WISH LIST: $300: a 4-day college tour for 1 student: $500: SAT prep classes for 1 student preparing for college; $6,000: a scholarship for a junior or senior high school student
College Bound targets underserved junior high and high school students who have the drive and desire to attend college. Each week, students meet for two hours, one-on-one, with college-educated mentors who tutor them in math, language, and SAT prep with the goal of improving the District's historically low test score (799 compared to the national average of 1,020). Mentors also explore scholarship opportunities and help students navigate the college application process. College Bound offers career and college fairs, and takes interested students on college tours during their spring and winter breaks. Seeking to ease the transition from high school to college, the College Support Initiative awards $73,000 each year in scholarship dollars. In 2007, 95% of College Bound's graduating seniors entered college. Pretty amazing when you consider that only 56% of their DCPS peers will even graduate from high school. With four community-based locations throughout the city, and plans to open a fifth in Ward 7 in Prince George's County (fall 2008), College Bound is making college a reality for young people in metropolitan Washington. So can you.
