College Bound
WISH LIST: $300: a 4-day college tour for 1 student: $500: SAT prep classes for 1 student preparing for college; $6,000: a scholarship for a junior or senior high school student
College Bound targets underserved junior high and high school students who have the drive and desire to attend college. Each week, students meet one-on-one with college-educated mentors who assist them in math, SAT prep, and college admissions, with the goal of improving the District's historically low test scores and college-attendance rate. Mentors explore scholarship opportunities and help students navigate the college application process. College Bound offers career and college fairs, and takes interested students on college tours during their spring and winter breaks. Seeking to ease the transition from high school to college, the College Bound support initiative awards more than $60,000 each year in scholarship dollars. In 2010, 100% of College Bound's academic mentoring students graduated from high school and were all on their way to college. Pretty amazing when you consider that less than 50% of their DCPS peers graduate from high school. With five community-based locations throughout the city, College Bound has initiated the "11 Campaign," which brings attention to the fact that 11 students drop out of DC schools each day. College Bound is making college a reality for young people in metropolitan Washington. So can you.
