DC Bilingual Public Charter School

WISH LIST: $100: funds a storybook club activity to teach kids that reading can be fun; $500: sends a class on an enriching field trip; $1000: provides a healthy lunch for 1 student for a year

Latino families in Columbia Heights and its adjacent Washington neighborhoods represent a diverse cross-section of recent immigrants from Central America, South America, and Africa--older immigrants who have raised their children here, and young parents just starting out in life. DC Bilingual begins with the belief that educating children and strengthening families in a bilingual and multicultural community means implementing an academically demanding, dual language program which fosters critical thinking, problem solving, bilingualism, and biliteracy for all. The program admits children from across Washington DC into pre-K through 5th grade. Providing all the services of a public elementary school, with a focus on knowledge and literacy in both English and Spanish (the dedicated staff knows that literacy in one's first language is essential to literacy in one's second), the school benefits immeasurably from the experienced management of CentroNa, a 23 year-old non-profit that now extends its award-winning early childhood model into an elementary school. In addition, as DC Bilingual focuses on education, CentroNïa offers before- and after-school options and a wide range of social services for parents. It's an innovative, cooperative model that promises great things for our youngest children. So, "vamos a aprender." Let's go learn!
