When the memory of Earth Day was still fresh, and the environmental movement in full bloom, Americans raised serious questions about the quality of the air we breathe. Ecology was the byword, and a 10-speed bike craze swept the nation; in 1972 more bicycles were sold than automobiles for the first time in the century. But the urban transportation system has rarely been friendly to cyclists. Washington Area Bicyclist Association conducts programs both for adult commuters who want to ride safely, and for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade who need to learn how to ride or walk with confidence. In the 1960’s, 60% of children walked or rode to school; today that figure is an abysmal 10%. As public health experts encourage physical activity in response to the obesity epidemic, WABA teaches that bicycling can really help. It also works to eliminate barriers for people in wheelchairs, older folks, and children (about one third of Americans don't drive!). To decrease congestion and pollution, WABA provides real travel choices that improve the transportation network's capacity. One 4-mile round trip by bicycle keeps about 15 pounds of pollutants out of the air we breathe. Your contribution supports the safety of young and old, and the all-important quality of our air!
