Arlington Public Schools Teenage Parenting Programs
WISH LIST: $100: supplies for teen mom knitting classes; $500: diapers for babies (not covered by food stamps); $1,000: prescriptions and medications for uninsured moms and kids.
Here is the profile of an Arlington teen mother: 11-19 years of age, little financial or emotional support, dysfunctional immediate family, school drop-out or low academic achiever, family history of violence – and a very high level of stress. The Teenage Parenting Programs provide a comprehensive combination of educational and social services that address the many facets of adolescent pregnancy and help pregnant and parenting teen moms to succeed in life and improve prospects for their children. At the Family Education Center, students continue their academic studies, are assisted in obtaining prenatal and childcare services, and learn parenting skills. Outreach for Parenting Teens locates out-of-school teens, facilitates their return to school or vocational training, and runs a weekly support group. A Young Fathers Program prepares its charges for successful fatherhood using a bilingual, bicultural male staff. Winners of four Person of Vision Awards in the last five years, the staff serves 250 teenage mothers a year, 200 young fathers, and nearly 275 children. All of them need your help and support.
