According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, the average rent for a 2-bedroom apartment in Fairfax County is $1,225. If housing should represent about 30% of income, that means earning $49,000 annually, something that one-quarter of the County’s households simply don’t do. Families with children are at greatest risk of homelessness – nationally, the average age of a homeless person is 9 – especially if they lack family and community supports to guide them through a crisis. HCSNV provides those supports, helping families and individuals attain decent, affordable housing. It offers short-term (up to 6 months) housing counseling, or long-term (1 to 2 years) case management, to give households the best opportunity to achieve self-sufficiency. It also provides intensive housing search assistance – identifying affordable housing units, contacting community-based organizations to advocate for a security deposit, and providing a weekly listing of low-market rentals. Case managers help clients navigate the system, assist those with limited language skills, and refer them to local programs and services. Your generosity means a place to live for someone in need.
