Frequent fish consumption advisories and swimming prohibitions speak eloquently of the need for a cleaner, healthier river. Through citizen action community advocacy, and enforcement, Potomac Riverkeeper works to protect and restore water quality in the Potomac River and its tributaries – from its headwaters in West Virginia, through the DC region, to the Chesapeake Bay. Reviewing and evaluating pollution hotspots and investigating violations, PRK helps the EPA and local governments comply with and enforce all aspects of the Clean Water and Safe Drinking Water acts. Polluters don’t get by PRK–they are forced to clean up their act. Through numerous stories and news segments on local television and radio, PRK has raised public awareness of pollution problems. It has also energized citizens to be environmental stewards of the Potomac River, recruiting and training a corps of volunteer “riverwatchers.” Potomac Riverkeeper unites organizations, government agencies, citizen activists, river users, and riverside landowners to protect water quality in the Potomac River watershed.
