The Shepherd's Table
WISH LIST: $100: 50 evening meals for guests; $500: one evening of medical care for those with no access; $1,000: 26 pairs of eye glasses for people with poor vision.
Begun as a small community-based soup kitchen, Shepherd’s Table is now the leading provider of basic human services in its community. The evening meal program is still at the heart of things: volunteers serve up some 145 meals each evening – and they haven’t missed a meal in 23 years. Most guests are individuals, many are homeless, many work, all are hungry. Services also include health care (through Mobile Medical Care, Catalogue ‘04), clothing, immigration assistance, job placement, and housing assistance. A bilingual counselor (with an extensive medical background and personal experience with immigration) provides guidance and advocacy in obtaining ongoing medical care. There is even an eye clinic, which offers services free of charge to those who meet eligibility guidelines. A Resource Center (mail and phone service, basic supplies, and transportation to shelter and appointments), as well as referral services, crisis intervention, and ongoing case management, ensure that clients are able to take care of themselves. 365 days a year, Shepherd’s Table helps its neighbors: after all, basic needs don’t take a holiday.
