Senior Services of Alexandria
WISH LIST: $100: 33 meals for a low-income, homebound senior; $500: employment counseling and placement for 2 job seekers; $1000: 83 senior trips to medical appointments and grocery stores
The original mission of Senior Services of Alexandria was to address age discrimination in the workplace, but like all good organizations that grow to meet changing needs, SSA is now very much more. It delivers 54,000 Meals on Wheels to the homes of more than 100 vulnerable, homebound seniors who cannot safely cook for themselves. Its Senior Taxi program serves low-income and frail-elderly seniors who cannot use public transportation: low-cost cab fares offer curb-to-curb access to public health centers, doctors’ offices, and grocery stores. SSA also helps those who have lost the capacity to manage their financial affairs: a money manager organizes and pays bills, balances checkbooks, prepares a budget, and teaches seniors to identify and avoid predators. Employment assistance is still central to the mission, and some younger seniors are even matched with elderly ones who need in-home assistance – a double benefit. SSA believes it is a moral imperative to address the needs of older people who are poor, disabled, and homebound. If this is your moral imperative, then you have found your cause.
