Neediest Kids
WISH LIST: $100: backpacks and school supplies for 5 students; $500: eye exams and new glasses for 5 students; $1000: warm coats for 10, shoes for 15, and underwear for 25 students
Each year, Neediest Kids donates thousands of dollars in clothing, services, and direct payments to meet the urgent requirements of over 12,000 of the region’s neediest, at-risk school-children in kindergarten through grade 12. The goal is to help with their most basic needs so that they can stay healthy, stay in school, get an education, and avoid the cycle of poverty that afflicts so many children in our region. Each of the seven major school systems in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia receives an annual distribution of funds; teachers, school administrators, and counselors identify struggling students whose needs can be addressed by prompt financial aid; and children are then given the assistance they need – glasses with which to read the blackboard, sneakers for walking safely to school, even underwear that will allow a child to change for gym class without being ridiculed. The lasting power of Neediest Kids is its simplicity, efficiency, and ability to direct resources virtually immediately to children in need. You can really help out here.
