EDGEWORKS Dance Theater gives voice to the complex experiences of African American men through dynamic choreography that pushes existing boundaries and challenges conventional perceptions of male identity. The first all-male, professional, contemporary dance company of predominantly African American men in DC, the company’s diverse repertory features the award-winning choreography of its artistic director, along with works by internationally-recognized African American male choreographers. EDT’s dream project is to reclaim and celebrate the legacy of African American men in contemporary dance: its Negro Dance Theatre Project will recover and preserve the history of its predecessor, the first all-male African American modern dance ensemble in the US. In live, onstage performances of a reconstructed Gotham Suite – a piece the Negro Dance Theatre debuted at Jacob’s Pillow in 1955 – along with Cold Suite, a contemporary response to it, EDT carries the legacy forward. Archival photographs and video footage will be preserved and a video documentary will be created. Winner of three Metro DC Dance awards, this unique company deserves your support. Make their dream project yours.
