Southeast Ministry

WISH LIST: $100: 1 digital camera for graduation pictures; $1000: 2 computer hard drives for the job research center; $3000: an accordion door to separate the job research center from the classroom

What’s special about Southeast Ministry is that it understands its clients well enough to know that they don’t just need a job, they need to think well enough of themselves to want a job. This is a tall order in Wards 6 and 8, a community with a huge population of ex-offenders, sky high unemployment rates, households headed by single women, and residents with low levels of education. But Southeast Ministry approaches these problems in a unique way, combining practical classes for men and women – like the AMEN Job Readiness program – with a course of study in African American culture and history that also explores self-development, family strengthening, and life skills. GED programs prepare students to take the official test, offering classes, small study groups, and private tutorials in math, science, social studies, interpretive arts, and writing skills. The focus is on academics, and also on self-esteem and self-sufficiency. Self worth – economic and personal – is what it’s all about. Your generous support helps rebuild an entire community.
