New Futures

WISH LIST: $1500: funds one semester of college for one student; $12,000 funds one student’s bachelor's degree

New Futures enables the lowest income youth in the District of Columbia to obtain a post-secondary education that would otherwise not be possible. Partnering with some of DC’s most effective community-based organizations - who nominate deserving young people to the selection committee based on financial need, character, commitment, academic performance, and the soundness of their educational and financial plan - New Futures selects its scholarship recipients and then works with its partners to mentor students throughout their post-secondary education. Students who pass the GED exam and those enrolling at technical and community colleges are all eligible. (Priority goes to those seeking post-secondary vocational education - support for which is very difficult to find.) And New Futures scholars complete their programs: they have an 80% "persistence" rate, compared to a 30-40% rate for their DC school peers. New Futures provides hope for an often neglected segment of this community, helps them to break the cycle of poverty and find success for themselves and the next generation of their families. Won't you lend a hand?
