New Futures

WISH LIST: $100: school transportation for 1 semester; $500: books for 1 semester of college or a vocational program; $1000: life skills workshop to prepare scholarship winners for post-secondary school

The name says it best: New Futures is all about creating new opportunities for young people who once thought they had none. In the District, just over half of public school students graduate and only one in ten completes post-secondary education. But at New Futures, extremely low-income DC students receive the financial guidance and job mentorship necessary to finish school and build a meaningful career. Partnering with 11 local non-profits (who nominate motivated, needy young people), New Futures offers both vocational scholarships (which cover 90% of costs) and College Bound funds, and works with students to determine which type of school would best serve their needs and dreams. A detailed Career Guide, which is widely circulated in the community, helps students make informed choices, as do career workshops and fairs. Scholar Workshops and Orientation ensure that students have the necessary tools to take on post-secondary education – and succeed. To date, 68% have graduated or are on track to graduate. You can be part of their new, vital futures.
