Horton's Kids

WISH LIST: $100: admission for a Sunday field trip for 20 kids; $500: college prep “supplies” for 1 student; $1000: 300 meals for children during tutoring and academic programs

Horton’s Kids has come a long way in the past 23 years. From offering Tuesday night tutoring at the Anacostia Public Library in 1992 to receiving the Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management in 2011, it has always kept its mission clear: educate and empower the children in Ward 8. The neighborhood, a hot spot for violent crime with limited access to medical services, poses extreme challenges for children trying to succeed in school; so the cornerstone of the Horton’s Kids program is thrice weekly, one-on-one tutoring at the US Department of Education and Rayburn House Office Building. All kids receive a healthy meal and snack at tutoring sessions; and the staff facilitates emergency dental and vision care, plus education and career services at the Ward 8 Community Resource Center. Children go on field trips, older students have weekly academic enrichment, and Horton's Kids families celebrate holidays together. A second family for so many, Horton’s Kids improves reading, math, writing, and the quality of life – one kid at a time.
