New Community for Children

WISH LIST: $500: a photography project about their community for 30 students; $1000: school supplies for 150 elementary students for 1 semester; $3000: all after-school programming for 2 students for 1 year

Most of the 100 kids at New Community for Children come from low-income homes where parents work long hours. For many, this program is like an extra set of parents, doing everything mom and dad would do – if only they could. Educational opportunity is essential to helping families rise out of poverty and NCFC offers engaging, hands-on learning experiences in math, reading, writing, arts, and science for K-4th graders, and after-school workshops for older youth in technology, reading, writing, math, science, and history. Weekends bring family-centered trips for younger children and visits to plays and colleges for teens. During the summer, an all-day summer camp includes educational enrichment, arts and crafts, swimming, tennis, and visits to local museums and festivals. When kids enter the program, only 19% handle math at grade level; after a year 56% are at grade level or above. To ensure that students continue to live up to their potential, NCFC works with families to help students apply to and request financial aid from independent schools. Almost all graduates go on to college. NCFC aims to reach more kids each year. Let’s help them grow.
