Mautner Project
WISH LIST: $100: 1 training session for 10 volunteers; $500: 1 8-week bereavement support group; $1000: training of 20 doctors/nurses on unique needs of lesbian patients
As mother and lesbian activist Mary-Helen Mautner reached the end of her battle with breast cancer, she reflected on the tremendous support that her family and doctors had given her — and envisioned an organization that provided the same love and care to all lesbians with cancer. In her memory, her partner and friends created the Mautner Project. A national health organization with a personal touch, it works around the country to educate healthcare providers about the unique needs of lesbian patients, and in our city it supports and provides services to those in need. Prevention is critical, and Mautner offers a wide range of programs that promote healthy living: smoking cessation and obesity reduction, as well as yoga and nutrition. And Mautner volunteers are always ready to offer a lift to a doctor’s appointment or a hand with grocery shopping and household chores. For underserved and often uninsured lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered women, the Mautner Project builds a medical community that is more educated, welcoming, and understanding — just as Mary-Helen Mautner envisioned it.
