Septima Clark Public Charter School
WISH LIST: $100: a week of snacks for 1 class; $500: an additional computer to enhance students’ technology skills; $1000: a complete classroom library of books
Septima Clark was founded to combat the academic crisis that faces boys in Southeast DC, two-thirds of whom do not read or compute on grade level, and 88% of whom are poor. Three times as likely as girls to be suspended, and two times as likely to be in special education, the academic achievement gap is thus a double gap for boys. So SCPCS establishes clear rituals, rules, and routines; clear structures for conduct and character development; and a longer day and year (33% more hours in the classroom). It begins early – with three-year olds – and from kindergarten forward the curriculum is college prep all the way: fast-paced, hands-on, structured, rich, and designed with boys in mind. School is at once safe and caring, structured and disciplined. Programs in dance and chess enrich the students’ education. And family engagement is key. The expectation is that all 8th graders will attend and succeed in selective high schools, go on to college, and graduate. It’s truly a new beginning.
