Sarah's Circle

WISH LIST: $100: a full month of hot lunches for 1 senior; $500: 1 full year of exercise classes for 1 senior; $1000: art class & supplies for all participants for 1 year

The US government's revised formula for identifying the number of people living in poverty is expected to show dramatic increases, and to double the number of older people in poverty to nearly one in five. Medicare premiums, deductibles, and prescription drugs are the main culprits. In the District, where a 20% abject poverty rate has been the norm, the number of poor seniors is likely to skyrocket. Most have raised families and worked all their lives, but the “golden years” have become a struggle for survival. Living on $1,250 a month (the lion's share goes to rent), many have less than $30 a week for food, utilities, and costly medications. The triple jeopardy here is poverty, declining health, and loneliness. So Sarah’s Circle steps in, providing affordable housing, a hot community lunch, a Wellness Center for residents and other neighborhood seniors; exercise, nutrition, and preventive health; recreational, educational, and artistic programming; and basic case management. Sarah’s Circle offers housing, community, companionship, and dignity to seniors. Your compassionate philanthropy makes a world of difference here.
