Lorton Community Action Center
WISH LIST: $100: food for 6 families for 1 week; $500: a utility bill for a senior citizen on a fixed income; $1000: transportation for 1 week of after-school programs
After an unexpected crisis – a job loss, new medical condition, or death in the family – low-income families sometimes face a frightening prospect: they can no longer pay for food or housing. For those in dire straits in southeastern Fairfax County, Lorton Community Action Center is the place to go. Here, families can fill their basic needs, provide for their children, and reclaim their lives. Last year, 2,492 people received warm clothes, furniture, food, household necessities, and financial assistance to prevent eviction. ESL classes enable and encourage adults to tackle job interviews and take a more active role in their communities; nutrition classes help families cook healthy meals on a limited budget. Tutoring and after-school programs ensure that kids can keep up in class; and a Back to School drive provides backpacks and supplies. LCAC also offers no-cost legal services through the Northern Virginia Pro-Bono Law Center. For families in profound financial distress, LCAC is not only a resource and home base, but a sure sign that the community truly cares.
