City Year Washington, DC

City Year Washington, DC brings together a diverse group of 17 to 24 year-olds for a year of full-time, team-based community service. One of twenty sites located across the country, in addition to sites in Johannsburg and London, the DC site provides critically needed services to some of the city's most underserved children and youth. “Corps members" -- the young idealists who serve with City Year -- deliver HIV/AIDS prevention education, provide literacy tutoring and academic support (including in-classroom support and after-school tutoring), and organize and implement leadership development opportunities for middle school students. They also engage children and adults in transformative community service projects: renovating schools, community centers, and homeless shelters that in turn are able better to serve the city. Perhaps most importantly, corps members are mentors and role models to thousands of DC children who need caring attention and unwavering guidance, and who benefit from a dose of idealism themselves.
