CulturalDC (formerly Cultural Development Corporation)
WISH LIST: $250: 1 artist's participation in Source Festival's 10-Minute Plays; $500: presentation of a new work by an emerging playwright; $2500: full exhibit for a visual artist at Flashpoint
Before canvas or costumes, one thing is on every artist’s wish list: space. In a city where real estate is both scarce and expensive, artists are hard pressed to find a gallery or theater to call home. Fortunately, CulturalDC makes space for art. Partnering with local businesses and developers, CulturalDC creates and maintains high-quality performance, exhibit, and living space in Washington. With a dance studio, black box theatre, and art gallery, CulturalDC’s downtown Flashpoint venue may host a multimedia exhibit one evening and the world premiere of a play the next. The newly-opened Source has rejuvenated 14th Street and hosts four resident companies, as well as the annual Source Festival – which unites 300 artists in a three-week celebration of writing and performance. CulturalDC also provides affordable housing and offices, individual grants through its Creative Communities Fund, and workshops and roundtables through its Business Center. The arts community not only stimulates economic development, it also enhances our quality of life. Isn’t that what philanthropy is all about?
