The only organization dedicated solely to promoting, representing, and supporting the region's dynamic and diverse theater community, theatreWashington is truly a leading player on our cultural scene. Its internationally-recognized Helen Hayes Awards for excellence in local acting, design, direction, and production are just the beginning: the newly-rebranded theatreWashington promotes through marketing and research initiatives the area’s 84 companies (from established houses to experimental start-ups), serves as a clearing house for education programs to ensure that all Washington-area kids have access to great theater, provides affordable professional development opportunities for local artists, advocates for strong arts funding in the Washington area, and, of course, continues to honor excellence at the annual Helen Hayes Awards ceremony. In addition, the brand new theatreWeek engages area youth in all elements of theater through workshops, classes, and conversations with critics and artists. Second only to New York in its per-capita number of productions, Greater Washington unquestionably has become a theater destination, and theatreWashington is key to spreading the word – and catalyzing our cultural growth.
