MusicLink Foundation

WISH LIST: $250: 1 keyboard for a MusicLink class; $1000: instruments for a new lesson site; $5000: summer music camp scholarships for 10 kids

With members of the National Symphony Orchestra on the Board, these folks know talent when they hear it. But talent doesn’t always mean opportunity for students who cannot afford private music lessons. MusicLink offers scholarships to budding musicians recommended by their music teachers – and private lessons mean the opportunity to excel. In its 18-year history, MusicLink has reached 700 students in DC, Virginia, and Maryland and has partnered with Septima Clarke Public Charter School, Achievement Prep, The Fishing School and other youth organizations to provide lessons in keyboard, percussion and guitar to budding musicians – with plans to expand to other safe sites in DC neighborhoods. Students learn the value of self confidence and hard work doing what they love: making music together. With ongoing lessons and opportunities to shine through performances and camp scholarships, MusicLink truly "creates musicians, one student at a time." The MusicLink Foundation has set a goal of reaching 1,000 students in the metropolitan DC area by the end of 2012, its 20th anniversary. Is the next Marsalis among them?
