City Kids Wilderness Project
WISH LIST: $100: 1 day of skiing and lessons for 2 students; $500: overnight camping trip in Shenandoah for 13 students; $1000: whitewater rafting trip for 20 students; $3500 year-round programming for 1 youngster
Each year, for 65 inner-city kids ages 11-18, City Kids Wilderness Project offers life-changing adventures: overnight camping trips, hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, and kayaking. After looking at maps, calculating mileage, and recording travel time, the young participants realize that city-life and country-life can coexist: the challenges of an outdoor environment promote relationship skills, problem-solving, and a healthy self-image -- all of which benefit life at home. School-year activities are offered monthly in the DC area, and three summer camp sessions are held in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, all at little to no cost. Kids work their way up from Rangers, to Mountaineers, to members of the Elite and Leadership Teams, taking on increased responsibility and challenges. Finally, the Job Training Program offers them a chance to earn money as mentors and junior staff members. During the academic year, skill-building workshops and guided practice of job application techniques prepare them for success beyond the program. Keeping urban youth involved and engaged is truly vital; your engagement brings so much to these kids.
