Live It Learn It

WISH LIST: $100: sponsorship of 1 student for a semester; $1000: academic trip transportation for 1 class for a year; $15,000: a full year of programming for 1 school

Youngsters study the sun with astronomers (and telescopes) at the National Air and Space Museum, recite a Frederick Douglass speech from the steps of his former home in Anacostia, and work with an artist at the Kreeger Museum to create Monet-inspired landscapes. Live It Learn It inspires academic achievement and ignites student potential through first-hand exposure to DC’s historical, cultural, and natural resources. It was born out of its founder's experience as a teacher in one of DC’s lowest-performing schools, where students were undermined by inadequate exposure to the world around them, limited connection to academic material, and little sense of why education mattered. The idea was to supplement classroom instruction with vital experiential learning, and LILI now brings its programs to students across the District. Teachers can focus on the basics while LILI assumes responsibility for creating and implementing its hands-on academic trips and supplementing them with pre- and post-trip classroom lessons. LILI makes history, science, and culture come alive for over 1,300 children – and generates a priceless love of learning.
