WISH LIST: $100: Senior Retreat spot for 1 student; $500: Fall College Tour for 10 students; $6000: College Bound scholarship for 1 student for 4 years of college
College Bound targets underserved junior high and high school students who have the drive and desire to attend college. Each week, students meet one-on-one with college-educated mentors who assist them in math, SAT prep, and college admissions, with the goal of improving the District's historically low test scores and college-attendance rate. Mentors explore scholarship opportunities and help students navigate the application process. College Bound offers career and college fairs and takes interested students on college tours. Seeking to ease the transition to higher education, the College Bound support initiative offers more than $60,000 each year in scholarships and a “virtual mentoring” program helps students navigate the complexities of college life. In 2010, 100% of College Bound's academic mentoring students graduated and were on their way to college. Pretty amazing when you consider that less than 60% of their DCPS peers graduate from high school. With six community-based locations throughout the city, and new international study tours to the Netherlands and Ghana offering educational enrichment, College Bound is making college a reality for DC’s young people. So can you.
