In 1972, ecology was the byword and a 10-speed bike craze swept the nation. More bikes than cars were sold for the first time in a century and countless cyclists searched for their place on city roads. Washington Area Bicyclist Association was created for them. Today, it has taken the lead in promoting bicycling as a healthy, sustainable means of transportation and advocating for better riding conditions across the region. For those switching from four wheels to two, WABA offers safety presentations, commuter mentoring programs, and Bike to Work Day – an 8,000-cyclist celebration of health, fitness, and fun. A free Kids' Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education program reaches over 10,000 students and Adult Education offers support to those seeking (or re-claiming!) confidence on a bike. Thanks to WABA, DC boasts the highest bicycle commuting rate on the East Coast and a low accident rate. One four-mile round-trip by bike keeps 15 pounds of pollutants out of the air. Join WABA in promoting the health of our citizens – and our planet.
