Mentoring to Manhood

WISH LIST: $125: tutoring for 1 boy for an entire year; $500: a motivating college tour for 4 boys; $1500: a year-long supportive mentorship for 1 young man

Last year in Prince George’s County, only 55% of black males graduated from high school. Change is needed, and Mentoring to Manhood is catalyzing it. A grassroots mentorship nonprofit, M2M offers personal and academic support to African-American middle and high school boys in the county. Almost 70% of M2M students come from single-parent homes; their average GPA is 1.8; and most report very low self-confidence. But through weekly group mentoring and tutoring, they develop collaboration and life skills, enjoy team sports and community service, and come together for a Leadership Retreat; active participants can be paired with a supportive individual mentor. In Anger Resolution workshops, youth and their parents practice better communication; at the Success Panel, community leaders inspire students with their stories of overcoming the odds through education and hard work. And inspire they do: 100% of boys agree that M2M has "made me want to try harder in school.” As one parent said, “Words can't express how fortunate my boys and I are to have found M2M. We cannot do this without you.”
