BlackRock Center for the Arts

WISH LIST: $100: 1 meet-the artist reception, free and open to the public; $500: specialized lighting equipment for annual dance festival; $1000: scholarships for 8 low-income children to attend arts classes for 10 weeks

In 1996, community leaders in Germantown founded BlackRock, knowing that a cultural institution in the heart of the new Town Center would be integral to the community’s growth. They were right: since opening in 2002, the Center has grown into a destination for art, music, and theater lovers and is the cultural anchor of Germantown. The only multidisciplinary arts center in upper Montgomery County, BlackRock presents 35 performances from September to May and a free summer concert series, featuring everything from jazz to classical ballet to children’s theater. Dubbed “one of the most beautiful and dramatic” spaces in the region, BlackRock’s gallery features over 100 artists a season and is free and open to the public; the education department offers creative and affordable classes for county students and a full summer of theater, drama, and dance. Any family that qualifies for financial assistance from county agencies also qualifies for a 70% scholarship at BlackRock. Leaping into its 10th anniversary season, BlackRock is poised to become a great arts center ... and cultural cornerstone.
