Appreciated Stock

Donating appreciated stock can be a tax-wise way to conduct your charitable giving. Sentinel Securities, Inc., a member of NASD & SIPC, handles gifts of stock for Catalogue donors. Here’s how it works:

Step One: Complete AND SIGN a Letter of Authorization and send it to your broker.

Step Two: Send us a letter or email (see “contact us” below) telling us that you have authorized a stock transfer and which shares you have contributed. Once the securities are transferred and you communicate your wishes to us, we will advise Sentinel to liquidate the stock and we will make the distribution exactly as you direct. PLEASE NOTE: there is NO IDENTIFYING INFORMATION attached to a stock transfer, so providing us with the details (your name and contact info, name of stock and number of shares transferred) is CRUCIAL. This also lets us remind you, if necessary, to identify the charities to which you would like to distribute your gifts.

Step Three: (Can be combined with Step two). Communicate your wishes to us -- ie, tell us to which charities you would like your funds to go. You can do this when you notify us of the stock transfer or, if you are making the contribution during the busy holidays, you can wait until January to tell us what you would like to do.

The Catalogue charges no fee for this service, but Sentinel does charge a flat transaction fee of $49.95 plus a $4.95 handling fee -- which will be deducted from the total amount raised by the sale of securities. Your contribution of stock to the Catalogue for Philanthropy is a charitable gift and is deductible (according to IRS tax laws) in the calendar year in which the donation is made.
