City Year Washington, DC brings together a diverse group of 17 to 24 year-olds for a year of full-time, team-based community service. One of seventeen sites located across the country, the DC site provides critically needed services to some of the city's most underserved children and youth. “Corps members" - the young idealists who serve with City Year - deliver substance abuse and HIV/AIDS prevention education, provide literacy tutoring and academic support, and organize and implement leadership development opportunities for middle school students. They also engage children and adults in transformative community service projects - renovating schools, community centers, and homeless shelters that in turn are able better to serve the city. Perhaps most importantly, corps members are mentors and role-models to thousands of DC children who need caring support and unwavering guidance, and who benefit from a dose of idealism themselves. Helping children and youth succeed, developing leaders, and improving the community: it’s a winning combination that you can support too.
