Here is the vision: Washington DC is a creative center that blends culture, arts, technology, commerce, real estate, entertainment, education, and entrepreneurship. And here is the strategy: sustain the presence and appreciation of arts and culture in downtown DC, and provide spaces and places for artists and arts organizations to grow. Enter: the Cultural Development Corporation (CuDC) – giving artists and arts-related businesses a chance. Whether it’s facilitating or developing real estate when the private market will not, advising arts groups about growth strategies, or providing new opportunities for performance and exhibition, CuDC works behind the scenes to strengthen the DC arts marketplace. In addition to Flashpoint, an innovative “arts incubator” that provides low cost work and performance space to emerging organizations, CuDC now owns Source, a 150 seat black box theatre on 14th Street that will offer administrative, rehearsal and performance space to resident theatre companies and area performing arts groups. Raising funds for its renovations and operations is a top priority. CuDC believes that Washington’s arts community not only stimulates economic development, it also enhances our quality of life: and isn’t that what philanthropy is all about?
