Concerned health professionals who knew first hand the plight of the uninsured founded DCPCA in 1996, They had worked on the front lines providing direct services, had begged, borrowed, and cajoled specialty appointments for sick kids, had provided health care in drafty, unheated basements.Worried about the lack of primary care in DC, they moved aggressively to become leaders in local health reform. What they found was that the District’s programs for the medically vulnerable were progressive, but that the financing, delivery, and quality of care needed drastic improvement. Serving as a bridge between providers and advocates of care on the one hand, and policy and decision makers on the other, DCPCA brings the key people to the table to ensure that needs are actually being met. As a result of its efforts, Medicaid enrollment has increased by 29,000 since 1998; the Medical Homes DC Initiative has provided critical technical support and training to community health centers throughout the District; HIV waivers have made treatment available to 1,900 hard-to-insure individuals; and 3,300 health care professionals, city officials and community leaders have learned to look to DCPCA for up-to-date information about issues that really matter. A critical part of health care for the medically vulnerable, DCPCA deserves your interest and support.
