In the Shaw, Logan, and Thomas Circle neighborhoods of Washington, 4,500 seniors live at or below the poverty line –many on incomes under $6,600 per year. They suffer from serious health problems and live without friends or family nearby, so inevitably things begin to happen: apartments become cluttered, people fall, journeys to the grocery store get harder and harder to manage. Emmaus Services for the Aging builds bridges between isolated elders and their communities, sending its 600 volunteers ages 6 to 90, to look for seniors who need a helping hand, and then tailoring its assistance to individual needs: a daily phone call, a weekly visit to run errands, a monthly health exam, help with a home repair, assistance in identifying government services and private aid. The over 850 seniors whom Emmaus serves receive an annual birthday card, a Thanksgiving dinner delivery, a holiday meal and gift – the sorts of things a loving family might provide. In response to growing demand, Emmaus recently opened a day center for seniors, offering them real hope of a new, more social existence. Trust philanthropy to bring people together for their mutual benefit! You can help, too.
