In many South Asian languages, “asha” means “hope.” That’s why it’s especially appropriate that women of South Asian descent who are survivors of family abuse turn to ASHA for just that. Some of ASHA’a clients speak little English, many distrust the legal system, and most believe what their abusers tell them—that they will be deported, jailed, or lose child custody if they try to leave. Often separated from their natal families, they have nowhere to go when they face domestic violence: ASHA becomes both the place to turn and the way to make sense. A toll-free helpline offers assistance—in their own language, from someone who understands their culture. Advocates help with divorce and custody hearings and access to reduced-cost or pro-bono legal, mental health and medical services. ESL classes, and educational and job-training opportunities, are also available. Because many clients are non-citizens and do not qualify for public benefits, ASHA maintains an emergency fund that provides for everything from housing to food and diapers until survivors can get back on their feet. Regular support groups give women a critical opportunity to talk openly in their own language about their common experiences. ASHA for Women has built its capacity to better serve more clients and is now receiving referrals from the Indian Embassy to serve victims of domestic violence and trafficking within and beyond the Washington metropolitan area. Giving hope by giving to ASHA: now that’s something you can do!
