Greater Washington is the seventh largest immigrant gateway in the United States with over one third of immigrants coming from Asiaï--a fact that was not lost on volunteer law students and lawyers who wanted to make the US legal system accessible to this growing segment of the population. For those in need of direct legal services, APALRC offers a multi-lingual hotline staffed by law student volunteers fluent in the most commonly-spoken Asian languages. Under staff supervision, students connect callers to legal services organizations, pro-bono programs, and the private bar. Free walk-in legal clinics offer assistance on family law, immigration, public benefits, employment law, and landlord/tenant rights. The Crime Victims Assistance Partnership helps Asian American victims, many of whom are low-income and limited English proficient, with the process of reporting crimes, applying for crime victim compensation, and navigating the criminal justice system. The Center also provides advice and representation on select cases regarding workers' rights and domestic violence. Last year, legal advice, representation, and referrals were provided to over 450 clients, legal interpreter support to 100 case assignments, Know Your Rights presentations to hundreds of workshop participants, and assistance to nearly 300 victims of crime. Part of a broad coalition of multi-ethnic organizations that drafted, proposed, and saw into legislation the Language Access Act--which makes government services more accessible to Latino, African, and Asian limited-English speakers throughout DC--the Center is always looking for new supporters. Won't you be a resource, too?
