When Mayor Williams came to visit their neighborhood after a local tragedy, the young people were prepared. They presented documentation they had collected about unsightly and dangerous conditions in their neighborhood--and within a year the city had torn down an unsafe playground and removed abandoned cars. Why this sudden interest in their urban environment? Chalk it up to Capital Region Earth Force, the latest effort in a national movement to train teachers, volunteers, and after-school facilitators to get kids excited about the environment. How do they do it? Not by telling young people what to think! Programs urge students to identify problems in the world around them, think openly and critically, and then take action. In Global Rivers Environmental Education Network (GREEN) students identify and address local water quality problems, and in Earth Force After School they engage in hands-on community problem solving. The SEED Public Charter School uses the curriculum as do other schools in the DC metro area and in Arlington and Alexandria. Kids are proving they can make a difference. How about you?
