Perhaps you've noticed the portrait of Duke Ellington on U Street, or seen the Metro Center mural on the way to work. Characterized by their extraordinary size and unusual attention to detail, it's hard to believe that City Arts' twenty murals and mosaics were created by one man and a team of inner-city youth--young people learning about teamwork, community, and beauty all at once. Founded in 1997 by award winning muralist G Byron Peck, City Arts offers year-long paid apprenticeships to local students, who receive intensive training before planning and creating some of DC's most visible works of art. In 2008, City Arts professional artists and student apprentices are creating a Columbia Heights community mural in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club; a series of mosaics for Mount Pleasant's Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home (with assistance from many of the nursing home's residents); and a high-profile artwork for the planned Diamond Teague Park, which will welcome thousands of baseball fans to the new Washington Nationals stadium. The murals are simply breathtaking and they often inspire neighborhood revitalization efforts, too. For his remarkable work in beautifying the city, and mentoring a whole generation of young artists, Mr Peck has received the 2000 Mayor's Arts Award for Excellence in Artistic Discipline. Your generosity can sustain this winning combination.
