When a charity’s been around for 85 years, you have to figure it’s doing something right. Since 1924, ESM has provided quality services to seniors regardless of religious affiliation. Operating three of the most affordable housing facilities around, ESM offers services to low-income seniors and those in need of assisted living. Its retirement community has served over 1,200 seniors in 34 years and offers volunteer opportunities, activities, meals—and even a hair salon for residents. For seniors in Northeast Washington who wish to remain at home, ESM’s Age-in-Place provides home and yard maintenance. Transportation via two handicapped-accessible buses is invaluable, especially to those in rural Prince George’s and Charles counties. For seniors facing difficult decisions about care and housing, ESM offers geriatric care management: visiting seniors and their families at home (especially those who are low income), helping draft and implement plans for meeting needs, and then carefully monitoring in-home service to ensure that quality is maintained. ESM also offers three group homes for formerly homeless and low income seniors in northeast Washington, DC. Because of services like these, the local office on aging and other private care managers frequently refer to ESM cases that no one else can handle. You can help ESM celebrate eighty-five years of caring for fragile elders—with a gift that ensures many more years to come.
