William and Sharon Murphy have shared their home with five children, a grandson … and over 200 homeless families. Today, the program that began in the Murphys’ house has expanded to include thirteen safe and affordable properties capable of sheltering up to 40 families throughout DC and Takoma Park. Most are immigrants from Latin America, or refugees from Bosnia and Kosovo. Many have been traumatized by rape, robbery, homicide, child abuse, or war. International relief organizations provide immediate assistance; Mary House steps in years later, when long-suppressed trauma overwhelms the ability to function. At Mary House, families find housing, clothing, and food, plus counseling, and pre/postnatal care. Children receive tutoring and attend summer camp. Families are encouraged to save for a home of their own, and attend workshops on family finance, home ownership, and employment. In-house advocates work with 8-10 families at a time (social workers would typically handle up to 50) helping them access the medical and child services for which they are eligible. Over the years, the Murphys have been honored with the National Caring Institute’s Most Caring Men and Women Award, the McAuley Institute’s Courage in Community Award, and a Point of Light Award - and Mary House will soon be inducted into the DC Hall of Fame. You can help keep the doors wide open to families in need.
